Depending on your personal and family medical history, you may start to have mammograms around the time that you turn 40. Mammograms are the most accurate way to diagnose breast cancer and other abnormalities.
It’s recommended for women between the ages of 44-54 to have annual mammograms. From the age of 55, you can continue with yearly screenings or have mammograms every other year.

You don’t need to do anything special to prepare for your mammogram, although you may want to wear pants or a skirt with a top as you’ll need to remove your clothing from the top of your body for your test.
You also need to avoid putting any lotions, powders, or deodorants on your breasts or under your arms on the day of your mammogram.
During your mammogram, you wear a gown that opens in the front and stand in front of the machine. Your technician positions your breast onto a platform and lowers a paddle to compress your breast.
Many women find the compression uncomfortable, but a standard annual mammogram takes only 15 minutes for both breasts. If you’re having a diagnostic mammogram because you or your doctor found a lump, the test takes around 30 minutes.
